ST BRIGID’S DAY

St. Brigid’s Day, or Lá Fhéile Bríde, is celebrated on February 1st and marks the first day of spring in the traditional Irish calendar, signalling the end of winter darkness and the beginning of new life. As one of Ireland’s three patron saints, alongside Patrick and Columba, Brigid is a figure of profound cultural significance, often associated with healing, protection, and creativity. Traditional customs include weaving St. Brigid’s crosses from rushes or straw to hang above doors for protection, as well as leaving out a piece of cloth, known as a Brat Bríde, for the saint to bless and endow with healing powers.
St Brigid – Patroness of Ireland – Pray For Us.

ST BLASIE’S DAY
St. Blaise’s Day, celebrated on February 3rd, honours the 4th-century Armenian bishop and martyr, Saint Blaise who is revered as the patron saint of throat ailments, wild animals, and wool combers. According to legend, Blaise was a physician who became a bishop and later lived in a cave surrounded by wild animals, which he healed. His most famous miracle involved saving a young boy who was choking on a fishbone, leading to his association with curing throat illnesses.
There will be blessing of the throats this week after Mass on: Tuesday – Ardfinnan 9.30am /Wednesday 10am Fourmilewater / Thursday 10am Newcastle.

No formal qualifications are needed, and training and discernment for the role is given by the Ascend Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Diocese.
